Lifting the lid - Formula One helmets uncovered

Before last Saturday at the Hungaroring, helmets only really made the headlines when a driver decided to sport a new livery or auction one for charity. But Felipe Massa’s dramatic accident during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix brought driver safety - and in particular the great strides made in helmet design over the past few years - into much sharper focus.

Back in Formula One racing’s early days, it was speed, not safety that took precedence. Legendary world champion Juan Manuel Fangio preferred to race in a simple balaclava. But by 1953, even Fangio couldn’t hold back the tide, and helmets were made compulsory. The ones used nowadays, however, bear little resemblance to their primitive 1950’s predecessors and are the product of years of research and development.

回到早期F1的比賽中,速度才是大家的焦點而不是安全。傳奇的世界冠軍Juan Manuel Fangio喜歡在比賽中戴巴拉克拉法帽(J三小...),但是在1953年,即使是Fangio也不能違反潮流,安全帽成為強制配件。現今使用的安全帽經過多年的研究和發展,跟1950年代的前輩還有一點相似。

As with all aspects of the sport’s safety, the FIA sets the standard, and the governing body’s most recent evolution of their helmet regulations, FIA 8860-2004, was developed over an eight-year period. Drafted by UK testing facility, Transport Research Laboratory (TRL), the new criteria were adopted by the three main Formula One helmet manufacturers, Arai, Bell and Schuberth, and the resulting homologated helmets were made compulsory by the World Motor Sport Council in 2004.

從運動安全的觀點來看,FIA訂下了標準,最新的安全帽規章FIA 8860-2004已經發展了超過八年。由英國測試單位TRL起草,新的標準被三個F1主要安全帽製造商Arai、Bell、Schuberth所採用,符合標準的安全帽已經在2004年由WMSC規定使用。

Although the exact composition of the materials that make up a Formula One helmet is a secret closely guarded by the manufacturers, the rigid outer shell features a couple of layers, usually fibre-reinforced resin over carbon fibre. Underneath, there is a layer of aramid (also used in many bulletproof vests) and another much thicker layer of polyethylene, a soft and deformable material, which is covered with the same flameproof material used in drivers’ overalls. Smaller quantifies of aluminium, magnesium and the binding agent epoxy resin are all added to the mix too.

The typical weight of a Formula One helmet is a remarkably minimal 1250 grams. The lighter the helmet, the less weight it adds to the driver’s head under extreme G-forces, which in turn lessens the risk of whiplash-type injuries when something goes wrong. But as Massa’s accident in Hungary so dramatically demonstrated, a helmet also needs to be super strong, so it can absorb impacts and resist penetration during a crash.

With these (somewhat incompatible) aims of being both tough and lightweight, it’s no wonder the effort that goes into crafting a helmet that can fulfil the FIA’s demands is immense. First, the driver’s head is scanned to create a life-size model. This sculpted replica is then wrapped, layer by layer, with 120 mats of high-performance carbon fibre to ensure the perfect fit.

With every thread of fibre consisting of about 12,000 ‘microthreads’, each of which is about 15 times thinner than a human hair, the process is as expensive as it is cutting edge. In one helmet, the total length of all the threads is approximately 16,000 kilometres. Over the same distance you could drive from Tokyo to London.

每一層的碳纖維由12000條微線構成,每一條都比人的頭髮細上15倍,加工過程就如它的重要性一樣昂貴。在一頂安全帽中,纖維的總長度接近16000公里,同樣的距離你可以從東京開車到倫敦。

The individual layers are then bonded together in an autoclave (a type of ‘industrial pressure cooker’), hardening under high pressure and at a constant temperature of 132°C. In addition, the parts which will be subject to huge loads once the helmet is in use, like the visor cut-out, are reinforced with supplementary materials, like aluminium and titanium.

As well as fulfilling its primary role of protecting a driver, the helmet must also allow him to see and breathe. Ventilation is provided through a small intake at the front, which filters the air to clean it of any motor oil, carbon and brake dust particles. Up to 10 litres of fresh air flow into the helmet’s interior per second.

安全帽不只要達成保護車手的安全,還要讓車手可以有好的視野和通暢的呼吸。前方所開的小孔可以維持安全帽的通風性,有濾網可以過濾空氣中的油污、碳纖維煞車所造成的粉塵,每秒大約有十公升的空氣流入安全帽。

The visor is made from a three millimetre-thick piece of specially-devised clear polycarbonate. Combining excellent impact protection, with flame resistance and excellent visibility, it’s by far the best solution. Most drivers tend to use tinted visors, which are coated with anti-fogging chemicals to prevent them misting up. In addition, there are several transparent tear-off strips attached to the outside, which the driver can remove as and when the visor gets dirty.

With equally strict safety standards to live up to, helmets are tested just as thoroughly as the cars. Fitted on an imitation metal ‘head’, and equipped with sensors that measure deceleration, the helmet is mounted on a sledge running on vertical track. To replicate an impact, the helmet (and ‘head’) are then lifted to a specified height and dropped on to a variety of objects, including a flat surface, a sharp edge, and a half-sphere.

The helmet test facility at TRL boasts a drop tower over 15.5m tall, which is capable of accelerating objects through gravity by up to around 17m/s (63km/h). A helmet designed to meet the FIA’s 8860 standards needs to withstand an impact of 9.5m/s (34.2 km/h). At this speed, the sensors must never display a deceleration of more than 300g, while 225 joules of energy must be dissipated.

In line with the regulations, helmets also undergo a variety of further deformation and fragmentation evaluations, as well as procedures to test the HANS device, which prevents a driver’s head from hitting the steering wheel. There’s also a compulsory fire test, during which the helmet is subjected to an 800°C flame for 45 seconds. To pass, temperatures inside the helmet are not allowed to exceed 70°C, otherwise it is back to the drawing board. The visor, meanwhile, has its protective qualities evaluated by having projectiles shot at it at 500km/h. The impact marks must not exceed a depth of 2.5mm.

要完全符合技術規章,安全帽要能承受各種變型和破碎評估,還要跟HANS一起做測試,HANS能夠防止車手頭部與方向盤發生撞擊。還有高溫測試,安全帽要能忍受八百度高溫四十五秒,要通過測試,安全帽內部溫度不可超過七十度,否則就要重新設計。面罩也有安全測試,要承受時速500公里的物體撞擊,撞擊痕跡不可深於2.5公厘。

On top of these all-important safety tests, helmets also go through stringent wind-tunnel trials to ensure the design creates minimal drag when the driver is travelling at speed. All in all then, from start to finish developing a Formula One helmet is a long-winded and pricey process. But considering that Massa is already up and about - and talking about getting back behind the wheel - it’s clearly worth all the effort.

在所有重要的安全測試後,安全帽還要經過風洞測試,確保設計成果可以將高速下的風阻降到最小。總體來說,一頂F1安全帽的從零到完成是很漫長的路和昂貴,但是想到Massa已經甦醒而且開始討論回到工作崗位上的事宜,這一切無疑的是非常值得的。

BMW announce Formula One withdrawal

BMW will end their involvement in Formula One racing at the end of the current season, it was announced on Wednesday. The move is part of what the German car maker described as a ‘landmark’ decision to restructure its motorsport activities.

BMW 在今年賽季結束因為財務關係將中止參加F1,將會在週三發佈消息。這個變動是BMW所稱為"里程碑"決議中的一部份,BMW將重新劃分他們的摩托活動。

The news came at a press conference held at the company’s German headquarters in Munich, attended by BMW Sauber team principal Mario Theissen, along with Dr. Norbert Reithofer, the chairman of the BMW board, and Dr. Klaus Draeger, the director for development.

這項消息是由在德國慕尼黑總部舉行的記者會上發佈,主席者有BMW Sauber車隊總管Mario Theissen、同行的有BMW董事會主席Norbert Reithofer博士和發展主管Klaus Draeger博士。

BMW became Formula One entrants in 2006 after taking over the Swiss Sauber team. The company said the decision to withdraw stems from a desire to dedicate more resources to developing new, sustainable road car technologies.

BMW在2006年接手Sauber車隊成為F1參賽者。BMW表示退出F1的原因是要集中資源研發更新、更穩定的市售車技術。

“Of course, this was a difficult decision for us,” explained Reithofer. “But it’s a resolute step in view of our company's strategic realignment. Premium will increasingly be defined in terms of sustainability and environmental compatibility. This is an area in which we want to remain in the lead. Our Formula One campaign is thus less a key promoter for us."

"當然這對我們是個艱難的決定",Reithofer 解釋說,"但是這是一個重新建構我們參賽策略的一步,獎金就是永續經營和環境保護,這是我們想要一直領先的區塊,對F1我們的贊助較小"。

Paying tribute to Theissen’s leadership of BMW Sauber, who finished third in last year’s championship, Reithofer added: “Mario has been in charge of our motorsports program since 1999. We have scored a large number of successes in this period, including some in Formula One racing. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mario Theissen and his team for this.”

We will now focus sharply on the remaining races and demonstrate our fighting spirit and put in a good result as we bid farewell to Formula One racing.”

BMW’s original Formula One involvement began in the 1980s as an engine supplier. With Brabham from 1982 to ’85, the company clinched eight Formula One victories and one world title, courtesy of Nelson Piquet in 1983. Following a final win with Benetton in 1986, BMW were absent from F1 competition until 2000 when they began supplying engines to Williams, taking 10 victories over the following five years.

BMW 從1980年代開始以引擎供應商身份參加F1。和Brabham車隊在1982年到1985年合作,拿到八場勝利和一個世界冠軍頭銜,由Nelson Piquet在1983年拿下。自1986年和班尼頓車隊拿下最後一場勝利後,BMW即退出F1直到2000年再以引擎供應商身分和威廉斯車隊合作,在之後五年拿到十場勝利。

In 2006 the company took over the Sauber team and enjoyed a positive first season as a fully-fledged works entry, finishing fifth in the constructors’ championship, with two podium finishes. The team went from strength to strength in 2007, occupying the ‘best of the rest’ slot behind Ferrari and McLaren. Scoring in all 17 races, BMW Sauber eventually finished second in the standings, behind Ferrari.

Last year, the team became championship contenders, with driver Robert Kubica clinching the team’s first pole position in Bahrain and then a maiden win at the Canadian Grand Prix. However, they have found the going a lot tougher this season and have scored just eight points to date.

Massa awake and progressing well

Felipe Massa has been taken out of an artificially-induced coma as his recovery continues, doctors told reporters in Budapest on Monday evening. The injured Ferrari driver has also been able to speak with family and medical staff.

醫師週一晚間在布達佩斯告訴記者Massa 正慢慢復原中,已經從昏迷狀態甦醒並且拿下氧氣罩了。這位受傷的法拉利車手已經可以和家人和醫護人員說話了。

"His condition has improved significantly over the last 24 hours and he remains stable," Lajos Zsiros, chief surgeon of the Hungarian defence forces told a press conference. "We have ended sedation and taken him off the respirator.”

"他的情況在過去24小時內有明顯的好轉並且穩定了",匈牙利的外科主任Lajos Zsiros向記者們表示。"我們已經將他從昏迷中甦醒並且不需要人工呼吸器"。

Massa suffered a fractured skull during Saturday’s qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix, after being hit by a spring from another car. He was flown from the Hungaroring circuit to the AEK military hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

Massa在週六的匈牙利站排位賽遭到其他車上的彈簧擊中而頭骨破裂,馬上從Hungaroring賽道飛送到AEK陸軍醫院接受手術治療。

"He is still sleepy, but has been able to reply to questions and has been able to move his limbs adequately," continued Zsiros, who went on to explain that it was likely to be at least a week before doctors could be sure that Massa has avoided lasting injury, though he stressed that a full recovery was possible.

Responding to reports of potential damage to Massa’s left eye, Zsiros said it was too soon to confirm or deny this as the Brazilian is not yet able to open the eye sufficiently to allow for his vision to be examined. This should change over the next few days.

Massa will remain in intensive care, though doctors have no plans for further sedation and his condition is expected to continue to improve. His wife, his parents, his brother and his friend and manager Nicolas Todt spent Monday night at the
hospital, where they will meet Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali on Tuesday.

The Hungarian Grand Prix Preview - Brawn look to shake Red Bull's dominance

The big question is, just how hot will it be in Hungary? If it is relatively cool, that could favour Red Bull the way that the recent races in Britain and Germany did. If it is markedly warmer than either of these, where the average ambient temperatures were 18.25 and 16.25 degrees Celsius respectively, Brawn GP will be hoping to get back into the title fight after two unhappy outings. The current forecast suggests an average ambient temperature in Hungary of 30.5.

最大的問題是匈牙利的天氣會如何?先前在英國和德國站的平均溫度是攝氏18,25和16.25度,如果匈牙利氣溫比平常低,那們對紅牛就有優勢;如果比較高,那麼BrawnGP就有希望在兩場不愉快的比賽後重新拿下頭銜,現在匈牙利的預報平均溫度是30.5度。

Red Bull must be considered the favourite, after two wins so far this season for Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber’s recent breakthrough success in Germany. The Australian is determined to keep winning, and is only 1.5 points behind his team mate.

"The last two races at Silverstone and the Nurburgring have been frustrating for the team as we have not been able to achieve the full potential of our car at the same time as our competitors have taken a good step forward,” he said. “However we are confident that the inherent performance of the BGP 001 which was demonstrated during the first half of the season has not disappeared and the problems that we faced were unique to the circumstances of those races.

"Hungary is always one of my favourite races and even more so this year as it should finally be a return to some real summer temperatures! The circuit holds some very special memories for me as the venue of my first Formula One win three years ago and it's fantastic to be going back there with the chance to compete for the win again.

The circuit generates an incredible amount of grip as the weekend gets underway which can provide a real challenge in finding the right set-up.

Ferrari won here last year courtesy of Felipe Massa, and they are confident of a stronger showing than of late in the improving F60, while at McLaren Lewis Hamilton and last year’s winner, Heikki Kovalainen, look forward to running the new aerodynamic package that briefly showed promise on the world champion’s car in Germany.

“The Hungaroring is one of the most demanding circuits for drivers because you’re busy throughout the entire lap,” Hamilton said. “It’s a bit like a kart circuit - there are lots of twists and turns and the only place to relax is along the start/finish straight, which is quite short. It’s also quite low-grip which makes overtaking particularly tricky.

Williams, Renault and Toyota are also optimistic for strong showings, while Force India boss Vijay Mallya has expressed the opinion that the revised aerodynamic package first seen in Germany will enable his team to get in among their faster rivals for the second race in a row.

Big things are also expected at Toro Rosso, where the STR4s will benefit from a significant aerodynamic update which includes the double diffuser that has been so effective on the Red Bull RB5 of late.

Sebastien Buemi will also have a new team mate as Spaniard Jaime Alguersuari, who replaces Sebastien Bourdais, is set to become the youngest man ever to race in F1 at the age of 19 years and 125 days.

At present the record is the subject of dispute. In 1980 New Zealander Mike Thackwell started the Canadian Grand Prix aged 19 years and 182 days, but the race was stopped after an accident on the first lap. Thackwell was unable to start the new race because he had to hand his undamaged Tyrrell over to team mate to Jean-Pierre Jarier.

現在的紀錄是有爭議的,在1980年的紐西蘭車手Mike Thackwell 在加拿大站參賽,當時年紀19歲又182天,但是只跑一圈就因為發生一場意外而結束,他必須將未受損的賽車給他的隊友Jean-Pierre Jarier,而他沒有賽車可以重新開始比賽。

Since Thackwell did not thus officially start the part of the race that was recognised as the real Canadian Grand Prix that year, his record was annulled. Thus the mark is currently held by Mexican star Ricardo Rodriguez who started the 1961 Italian Grand Prix aged 19 years and 208 days. Besides Thackwell and Rodriguez, other 19 year-olds to race in Formula One were Chris Amon, Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel and Esteban Tuero.

Hungary marks a change in Bridgestone’s recent philosophy of leaving a gap between their dry tyre compounds. As in Monaco, they will bring their soft and super soft wares.

Hirohide Hamashima, director of motorsport tyre development, said: “We have made the change to the tyre allocation concept based on the data we have collected from races so far this year combined with our knowledge of the tracks we visit for these races. The cars of 2009 are very different to those used last year so we have learnt a lot so far this year, and they do use their tyres differently from before. Hungary is a circuit where the characteristics demand our softest tyres. This is also true for street courses, and we used the softest allocation earlier in the year at Monaco, and will again in Valencia.”

Q&A with Toyota's Timo Glock

Last year Toyota's Timo Glock left Budapest a happy man, after clinching his first Formula One podium at the Hungarian Grand Prix. As he returns to the Hungaroring for this weekend’s race, Glock is optimistic he could enjoy another successful outing at the track…

Q: Tell us about your podium in Hungary last year.
Timo Glock: It was a really special moment for me to be on the podium in Formula One for the first time, and it was great to be fighting right at the front. Everything came together and it worked out perfectly. It was the race immediately after my accident at Hockenheim so maybe it surprised some people to see me being so competitive. But the truth was that Hockenheim was a turning point because we got the car really working well for me. After that, the fantastic result in Budapest was the start of a great run in the second half of the season.

Q:談談你去年在匈牙利站上頒獎台的心情。
Timo Glock:第一次在F1站上頒獎台,那對我真是特別的一刻,而且領先比賽的感覺很棒。所有的事一起出現但是都運作的很完美,那場比賽前我才在霍根海姆發生事故,所以或許有些人對我的表現很意外,但是事實上霍根海姆是個轉戾點,那時我們有了一輛適合我的賽車。之後從布達佩斯驚奇的成績開始了美妙的下半賽季。

Q: What did it mean to finish on the podium for the first time in Formula One racing?
TG: I really enjoyed that feeling; it's what I have worked so hard to achieve all through my career. When I left Formula One at the end of 2004 I knew it would be really tough to get back but I never gave up and I gave everything in Champ Cars and GP2 to get my chance. But getting back to Formula One was just the beginning and it was a great moment to stand on the podium in Hungary after finishing second. That gave me a lot of satisfaction and I really liked the feeling. I am determined to do it many more times!

Q:第一次在F1站上頒獎台,對你有什麼意義?
TG:我很享受那時的感覺;那就是我生涯一直所努力的目標。當我04年離開F1就知道要重回F1將會很艱難,但是我從不放棄,並且在Champ Cars和GP2盡最大努力去得到機會回F1,但是回到F1只是個開始。能在匈牙利拿下第二站上頒獎台真是美好的時刻,那給我很大的滿足而且我很喜歡那種感覺,我打算要感受更多次那種感覺。

Q: Was that your best performance in Formula One so far?
TG: It was the best result of last year but I was also very proud of my performances in several races, particularly finishing fourth in Singapore and Canada and some other races where the result maybe wasn't as good but I drove really well. This year I was on the podium again in Malaysia so that is one of my best performances as well; it's always a highlight when you finish on the podium.

Q: Is your first podium more special than the ones that follow?
TG: In a way it is more special when you are the podium for the first time because it is a unique experience and you have nothing to compare it to. But it's always a great feeling when you have performed to the maximum and achieved a really strong result. My third place in Malaysia also felt great because it was the result of a fantastic team effort and I'm sure my next podium will be pretty special too.
Q:你第一次上頒獎台的體驗是否比今年這次特別?
TG:某種程度上來說第一次上頒獎台的經驗是更特別的,因為那是不同的經驗,沒有其他事可以相比。但是當你發揮到極限並且拿到很好的成績,那感覺也是很棒。我在馬來西亞拿到的第三名也是很棒,因為那是在車隊努力下驚人的成果,而且我確定我下次上頒獎台的經驗會一樣的特別。

Q: Are you generally successful in Hungary? Why?
TG: I have always been quick there, right from my first visit in 2004 when I was a Formula One test driver taking part in Friday practice. I was on the pace from the first session and that continued when I went back in GP2. I was second and fifth in 2006 but I was really unlucky the next year because I qualified on pole but there was a wheel problem at my pit stop which ruined my race, then in the sprint race I was fighting for the podium before a mechanical problem. So in terms of results Budapest has been average for me but I have always been competitive there. It's just a fun circuit which is quite challenging for a driver;
it feels like a kart track when you are driving a Formula One car there.

Q:整體上來說,你在匈牙利站總是較得心應手是嗎?為什麼?
TG:從我04年以測驗車手身分第一次造訪匈牙利站,我在週五的練習時間上場,之後在匈牙利的表現總是很快。我那時在第一段練習時間速度飛快,之後到了GP2,在06年我拿到第二和第五,但是下一年很不幸的,我拿下竿位但是在進站時遇到方向機柱出問題而毀了我的比賽,之後的衝刺賽中,在我遇到機械問題前我正在為站上頒獎台奮戰著。所以從這些結果看來,布達佩斯對我是很公平的,但是我總是在這裡很有競爭力,這是一條非常考驗車手的有趣賽道。

Q: Will the Hungaroring suit the TF109?
TG: I hope so! It's quite tricky to judge before Friday practice. We have made a big improvement on slower corners in the past few races which is quite encouraging going into the Hungarian Grand Prix. It is usually pretty hot in Hungary as well and our car has good cooling efficiency so that should work in our favour. So I am reasonably optimistic our car will go well but we'll have to wait and see.

Q:匈牙利站適合TF109發揮嗎?
TG:我希望是的!在週五練習前很難做出判斷,我們已經改善車子在過去幾場比賽中慢速彎角的表現,這對匈牙利站有很大的幫助。匈牙利也一如往常的熱,而我們的車散熱效率不錯,所以對我們來說這有些優勢。所以我有理由可以樂觀看待我們的車會有好成績,但是我們還是要看看其他人的表現。

Q: What are your goals for the 2009 season?
TG: My goal this season is simply to score as many points and podiums as possible. I don't have specific goals in the way I did for 2008, when I wanted to get 20 points and finish in the top 10 of the drivers' championship. My second place in Hungary started the ball rolling and I achieved both my targets. This year I just want to be as quick as possible from race to race, scoring as many points as I can. So far we have had some ups and downs but it is mainly positive.

Q:你對2009年賽季的目標是什麼?
TG:我本季的目標很簡單,就是儘可能的拿下積分和登上頒獎台,我像08年一樣沒有很確切的目標,當我想要拿到20分積分並且擠進年度車手排名前十名時,我在匈牙利拿下第二名後就開始有所斬獲,最後我兩個目標都達成了。今年我只想要在每場比賽都盡可能的表現最好的速度,拿下更多的分數,到目前為止我們有起有落但是大致上還是很正面的。

就是那道光!!!!

  上週的打工工作內容跟之前不同,週末一天都待在廚房幫忙,也終於見識到了所謂的真功夫。

  先說一下工作內容,簡單的說(其實就是很簡單...)就是第一位師傅抓完每道菜的量後,由我們來看是要給哪個師傅料理,炸的就分去油鍋、炒的就攤給三位師傅料理、魚的單就交給誰...等等之類的,之後料理完再看是哪一區的菜,再送過去由菜口(出菜窗口)處理。

  所以在等待空檔就可以見識到師父的工夫,真的是乾淨俐落阿,毫不拖泥帶水,下料、放佐料、翻炒、分菜一氣呵成,看了心中不禁暗暗叫好阿 XD,尤其是最後甩完鍋起手分菜那一剎,鍋鏟完美的將菜餚全數接下,真的是漂亮,就像看李連杰的武打一樣俐落阿,原來下廚的男人這麼酷阿,哈哈哈。

Faultless Rossi holds Lorenzo off for Sachsenring win

Valentino Rossi was never under any illusions that he would have it easy in his defense of the MotoGP world title, and once again the Italian was made to fight for glory at the Alice Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland. The Fiat Yamaha rider took the win at Sachsenring by just the smallest of margins from persistent rival Jorge Lorenzo in a breathtaking race to extend his lead in the World Championship.

Rossi在保衛冠軍頭銜的路上從來沒有輕敵的念頭出現,並且這位義大利車手再一次的為了榮耀在賽場上奮戰。他在德國站以些微差距擊敗強勁的競爭者Jorge Lorenzo,贏得這場驚人的比賽後也繼續在積分榜上領先。

After starting from pole for the first time at the German track, Rossi took the lead of the race after thirteen laps. Both the Italian and teammate Lorenzo eked out an advantage to make it a two-way battle to the chequered flag, with a last lap battle reminiscent of the Barcelona round of the series one month ago. Rossi’s definitive pass had come at the end of the home straight with two laps to go, and he brushed off the young pretender’s overtures for his fourth win of the 2009 season.

Starting from eighth on the grid, Dani Pedrosa had established his credentials in the dry with the best lap in the morning warmup. He had another storming start at Sachsenring to move up to the lead group, and put up a bold fight both amongst and behind the Yamaha duo. The Repsol Honda rider completed the podium with a race time under three seconds down on the top two.

Early leader Casey Stoner’s condition lasted longer than he had expected in the dry race, and he was able to mount a serious challenge for the win. With five laps to go, however, he was passed by Pedrosa going into the first turn, and one lap later a sit-up meant that he lost touch of the Spaniard.

Horner: Vettel and Webber to get equal treatment

Following his German Grand Prix success, Mark Webber is closer than ever to Red Bull team mate Sebastian Vettel, both in terms of performance and world championship points. Webber is third in the standings on 45.5 to second-placed Vettel’s 47.

在德國站的勝利後,Mark Webber 在競爭力上還有積分方面都比之前更接近他的隊友Sebastian Vettel。Webber積分45.5排名第三,落後Vettel的47分。

But while championship leader Jenson Button may hope to gain from the Red Bull duo taking points off each other, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner insists the team won’t favour one driver unless a clear title favourite emerges.

但是目前積分領先者Jenson Button或許會希望可以在紅牛兩位車手之間的競爭中得利,紅牛車隊經理Christian Horner表示車隊會偏向哪一位車手直到爭冠態勢已經明顯的時候。

“We will continue to support both drivers equally,” Horner told Red Bull’s official website. “There’s only a point and a half between them, so obviously they are both in contention for the drivers’ championship. There’s a long way to go to catch up with Jenson Button.

大古山賞夜景看飛機


  今天剛好放假,也因為我的無膽,所以還是只能自己一個人過。睡到中午後接到綠光打來的電話,要我去幫忙打桌,雖然這個月的時數很少,不過難得的假日,而且今天天氣超好阿~~~,不想被工作佔去這好心情,只好說聲抱歉囉。

  下午三點多出門剪個頭髮,額頭一被蓋到就會令我煩躁阿,很久沒去印象剪了,去了之後...下次還是跑遠一點去桃園吧...。

  之後問問唯綱要不要找些東西吃,去買了個潤餅和吊鐘燒,剛出爐的真的不錯吃。之後就出發往大園前進囉,一路抓個方向就騎,也是讓我找到了,奇跡的裝潢也改變了,下次有機會再去看看。到了大古山,夜景有些失望,因為不是很高的點,所以看的不夠遠、離市區也太遠了,白天去應該更好,景色會更清楚漂亮,機場也更清楚,建議可以黃昏時間去,比較不熱又看的清楚。

Todt to stand for FIA presidency

Former Ferrari boss Jean Todt has confirmed he will stand for the presidency of the FIA, Formula One racing’s governing body, when the position comes up for election later this year.

法拉利前經理Jean Todt已經證實他將參選FIA主席,FIA 是F1賽事的管理者,主席的人選將在今年稍晚的時間透過選舉產生。

Current President, Max Mosley, announced on Wednesday that he will stand down in October from the post he has held since 1993. Mosley has endorsed Todt’s candidacy.

現任的主席Max Mosley在週三宣佈他將在十月(引咎)下台,自1993年之後他一直擔任主席一職。Mosley也贊同了Todt的參選。

“I think he would be the ideal person to continue but to also extend the work of the last 16 years,” said Mosley of the 63-year-old Frenchman in a letter to the FIA’s member clubs. “He can be relied on in all areas where the FIA is active. I very much hope you will give him your support.”

我病了

  最近老是提不起勁,有點欲振乏力的感覺,看其他人總是不順眼,懶的理別人,我是怎麼搞的...,真糟糕。在上課方面目前也算很順利,只是一直覺得時間不夠用,很多自己想玩的東西進度非常緩慢。

  打工方面也感覺悶了,都剩沒幾個男工讀生了,算一算一隻手就數完了,還在彼此之間互看不順眼,雖然有的行為我也看不慣,不過大家年紀相仿,有什麼不能好好談的勒?真是不痛快阿。

  這禮拜去打工,才發覺我的感情方面,還是跟國中時一樣阿,我以為已經跟著年紀增長,或許我膽子也更大了,不過真正遇到了,還是一樣顧忌很多,想太多反而讓自己裹足不前,真的是沒有成長阿。明知應該做的就是大方的邀請,但是一直跨不出這一步,反而自己一直胡思亂想,我還是個小孩子阿...。

Rossi describes 100 Grand Prix wins

When Valentino Rossi reached 100 Grand Prix victories with his superb win at Assen less than two weeks ago it was a true landmark moment in a special career, with only one other rider having ever achieved the same feat – the legendary Giacomo Agostini.

Rossi celebrated his century of triumphs in The Netherlands by unfurling a huge banner featuring a photo montage of his journey to yet another remarkable milestone. A week later at Laguna Seca motogp.com was with him as he described the highlights of his career.

I just had one victory in 1996 but it was not bad for a rookie!”

On his first 2001 victory in Japan – win 29 of his career in the opening race of the year at Suzuka – which led to his third World title and his first in the premier class, Rossi commented, “That was a fantastic season with 11 victories and the third World Championship for me. The first win of the year at Suzuka on the 500cc Honda was a brave victory. Then there were more great races that season and at the end of the year I won the championship and I had my photo taken as you can see with Mick Doohan and Franco Uncini.”

After Mugello there was Laguna Seca and a great battle with Casey (Stoner), where I overtook him on the Corkscrew corner and that was a turning point of the year.”

Raikkonen rules out a Ferrari win in Germany

With just 26 points and one podium after eight races, Ferrari have endured a difficult first half of the season and are 65 points shy of where they were this time last year. For driver Kimi Raikkonen the time has come to admit a win will be highly unlikely at this weekend's German Grand Prix and a podium finish will be his real target.

經過了八場比賽只上過一次頒獎台和拿到二十六分,法拉利經歷了一個艱困的上半季並且跟去年的此時相比,他們的積分落後了六十五分。法拉利車手Kimi Raikkonen承認要贏得這週末的德國站有些過度期望了,登上頒獎台會是他真正的目標。

“Realistically this year our objective can’t be a win,” said Raikkonen on Ferrari’s official website. “We still have to make up ground compared to the leaders as far as performance is concerned. It’s always difficult making predictions and promising something to the fans, but for us today a place on the podium is already a good result, considering that we’ve been there just once this year.

At the previous round, June’s British Grand Prix, the Finn qualified in ninth and finished one place higher in eighth to score a point. But after crossing the line over a minute down on the victorious Red Bull of Sebastian Vettel, the Italian team had little reason to celebrate and have been back at their Maranello factory seeking to improve the errant F60 ahead of this weekend’s German event.

The team has continued to work very hard over the last weeks to bring some new solutions to this race,” Raikkonen continued. “The track should be better for the F60’s characteristics than Silverstone, but we’ll get a clearer picture during Friday’s free practice sessions. To be competitive you need a car with good traction, which is very stable while braking.”

While his faith in his car’s suitability for the Nurburgring may prove well founded, Raikkonen’s record in Germany leaves a lot to be desired. Despite scoring pole on four occasions, he has never won on German soil, and with his declared objectives for this weekend's race, it doesn't look like he will remedy this in 2009.

De Puniet content to extend top ten run

Randy de Puniet’s 2009 campaign continues to be a stark contrast to his crash-affected 2008 season, and the Frenchman kept his LCR Honda satellite RC212V upright again on Sunday – unlike several of his MotoGP rivals, with only 12 riders crossing the finishing line at Laguna Seca.

De Puniet was the ninth of those 12 to do so and whilst it was not a spectacular result he now has six top tens from eight races to his name this year.

Looking back over Sunday’s 32-lap race, which he commenced from 14th on the grid, De Puniet remarked, “I am quite satisfied as it was hard to expect a better result starting from the fifth row on this ‘up-and-down’ track. I struggled with grip problems from Friday and we tried to make some adjustments but in the end the bike was not at 100%. My start was not brilliant and I hit some traffic in the first few laps, but after that my rhythm was good enough to pass a few riders.”
