FIA willing to defer new points system

Formula One racing’s governing body, the FIA, has said it is willing to postpone the planned introduction of a new points system until 2010 if the teams are unhappy with making the change for the 2009 season.

F1賽事的管理單位FIA,已經表示如果車隊不喜歡2009年新的積分制度的話,將延遲到2010年再實施。

The new system, which would see the driver with the most wins (rather than points) crowned champion, was announced on Tuesday by the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council, after it rejected an alternative proposal for a revised points structure from the teams.

在新的積分系統下,我們會看到勝場數最多的車手(不是積分最高)得到世界冠軍,這項新制度在週二的WMSC會議後發佈,在會議中則否決了另一項由車隊們提出,修改現行的積分分配的方案。

The teams have since expressed their belief that the rules could not be changed so soon prior to the start of the season without their unanimous agreement and on Friday the FIA offered to defer the plan.

車隊們表示在沒有得到他們的全體一致同意的情況下,在賽季開始前突然的變更規則不是個好主意。之後FIA在週五表示將延遲這個新積分規則。

The full statement from the FIA:
“On 17 March, the FIA World Motor Sport Council unanimously rejected FOTA’s proposed amendment to the points system for the Formula One Drivers’ Championship. The ‘winner takes all’ proposal made by the commercial rights holder (who had been told that the teams were in favour) was then approved.

The 2009 Season Preview: Part One - All change please

Few Formula One seasons have been quite so keenly anticipated as this one. Major changes to the regulations, aimed at enhancing the show by promoting more overtaking opportunities while at the same time reducing costs, have given everyone a dramatic new set of challenges.

很少有F1賽季向這一季如此令人熱切期待。調整規則的目的在讓比賽更為精采,提高超車的機會同時降低參賽花費,如此一來讓所有排名都將有戲劇性的改變。

The most significant changes relate to aerodynamics, with smaller rear wings and wider front wings which, for the first time since 1969, may be adjusted by the driver, twice per lap. This is a direct result of intensive research done last year by Formula One’s Overtaking Working Group’s into ways of generating passing opportunities.

最主要的改變在空力方面的規定,尾翼縮小、前鼻翼變寬而且車手每一圈可以做兩次角度調整。這是去年F1超車研究團隊提出增加超車機會的方法。

Hand-in-glove with that goes KERS, the Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems which can give drivers up to an additional 85 horsepower for 6.6 seconds a lap, available via a steering-wheel mounted ‘boost button’ - a sort of environmentally friendly ‘push-to-pass’ aid, if you like.

在增加超車的目的下導入了KERS系統,動能回收系統每一圈可以額外提供車手85匹馬力並維持6.6秒,經由方向盤上的"加速按鈕"釋放動力,營造出"按了就超"的方便超車環境。

Then there is the much-welcomed return to slick tyres, a ban on testing once the season has started, and the requirement that engines have to cover twice the mileage that they were allowed in 2008.

備受歡迎的光頭胎又重新出現在場上,有關測試的禁令也開始了,引擎也比須如2008賽季所規定的負荷兩倍的距離。

Engineers have thus had to adjust to fundamental changes in four key areas at once. 

技師必須立刻調整四個關鍵區域的設定。

So profound are the aerodynamic changes that everyone has had to start again, almost from scratch, and there have been some highly innovative interpretations of the rules in areas such as diffuser design, in the case of Toyota and Williams, and in suspension layout, as in the case of the Red Bull RB5 which sees a Formula One car revert to rear pullrods for the first time in more than a decade. Variety is clearly still a spice of F1 life as everyone explores fresh avenues of design.

空力方面的重大改變讓所有人幾乎是重新回到起跑線上,而且已經有很多新規則下產生的高度創新設計,例如Toyota和Williams的尾部擴散器,還有紅牛的RB5賽車的後避震器總成使用拉桿是十多年間第一次出現。

KERS represents largely uncharted territory, while giving F1 a crucial green edge to its activities. The sport will once again become the invaluable crucible in which such technology is developed at a far faster and more innovative rate than could ever be the case in the road car world, and will thus be hugely beneficial in shaping the next generation of economical passenger cars.

While it offers a calculable performance advantage, KERS also presents significant problems with packaging, especially as the units so clearly affect a car’s crucial weight distribution. Then there is the issue of deploying KERS, which has an effect on a car’s handling and balance at critical times during each lap. 

KERS展現了性能上的優點,也帶來了明顯的整合問題,對整部車子的配重影響很大。所以對於KERS的佈署非常重要,影響到整部賽車每一圈關鍵性的操控和平衡。

Formula One cars have a minimum weight of 605 kg, including the driver. Teams can easily build cars lighter than that these days, and the difference between the actual weight and that minimum is made up with ballast. This, naturally, is positioned at various points on the car to achieve the optimum effect. Traditionally, this has put heavier drivers at a disadvantage, as they have less ballast with which to balance out the car. With KERS the problem is exacerbated by the weight of the system, and the fact that it has to be mounted towards the rear of the car, thus complicating weight distribution.

It is far from a clear-cut issue whether KERS will be advantageous everywhere, and several teams are deferring the introduction of their systems until they feel they have their basic 2009 packages sufficiently sorted. The most aggressive, however, such as BMW Sauber, may well use it from the outset.

KERS是否是個助力現在還看不出端倪, 一些車隊延遲推出KERS系統直到他們確定2009年的套件已經完全確定了。最有衝勁的,像是BMW車隊,會在一開始就使用KERS。

“This has been a huge challenge, one which we have taken on with great drive and determination,” admits their team principal Dr Mario Theissen, arguably KERS’ greatest proponent after FIA president Max Mosley who introduced the idea. “When I look back at how far we have come in such a short space of time, it really is very impressive. Here, Formula One has taken on the role of technology accelerator for series production cars of the future."

While purists will applaud the return of slick tyres, they also present some significant challenges as far as balancing the cars are concerned. Getting rid of the grooves that have been a feature since 1997 has increased the area of the narrower front tyre by a greater percentage than the wider rear and that has had the effect of reducing understeer and increasing oversteer. Making Bridgestone’s control tyres last over long race stints will be a key factor in winning.

當老車迷熱烈歡迎光頭胎的再次出現時,也帶來了一些對車子的平衡性的挑戰。自1997年以來溝紋胎成為車子的特徵以來,現在擺脫了溝紋胎,相較於後輪而言較窄的前胎,光投胎減低了賽車的轉向不足而增加了轉向過度特性。在長距離比賽中節省Bridgestone輪胎的磨耗將成為重要的勝利因素。

Small wonder that Ferrari’s chief track engineer Luca Baldiserri was moved to comment: “We’ve never seen such a revolution in F1…” Nobody disagrees.

小小的疑惑在法拉利技師Luca Baldiserr的評論中可以看出,"我們從來沒有看過F1有過如此大的變革...",沒有人會反對這句話。

Thus the scene is set for another gripping season in which so much will remain unpredictable until the first few races have been run. And which will welcome yet another exciting new venue when the finale is held at the bespoke Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, on November 1. 

可以感覺到這將是一個戲劇性的一個賽季,在第一場比賽開跑前有如此多的變數影響著比賽。另外將迎接一個新的賽道出現在賽程表中,在阿拉伯聯合大公國 Abu Dhabi的 Yas Marina Circuit 將在11/1豋場。 

Who will be crowned world champion by then is anyone’s guess, especially given the most recent rule change for the 2009 season. For the first time in Formula One history, the drivers’ title will be decided on wins alone, with points used only to settle the lesser placings. 

在2009年賽制大變革之後,大家都在預測誰將是世界冠軍。今年也將是F1史上第一次以分站冠軍數目決定世界冠軍,而積分將是次要的評量標準。

It could place a whole different complexion on races, especially towards the end of the year - in 2009 winning will be everything!

如此將為比賽帶來完全不同的風貌,特別是在賽季末 - 在2009年贏得冠軍就是一切。

又一個禮拜

  又過了一個禮拜。從這一週開始,只要時間允許,每天翻譯一篇F1或GP的新聞,讓自己多看看英文,既然沒有電影看,這樣做也不錯,雖然一直查翻譯,不過相信累積起來還是有很大的幫助。中心自助餐品質真是糟糕,雖然便宜可是老闆態度不好,菜色又差,只有晚上去吃個炒飯補充一下,早餐和中餐都吃羊角麵包解決,一天三餐吃飯前大約90元解決,一天100元打發,不知道這樣會不會營養不良阿,神阿~請賜給我一個打工機會吧~~。

  這個周末終於回到東眼山繞了一圈,沿66快速道路走,一下子就到大溪了,比以前更近囉。路上還遇到一台紅色F430 Spider還是個女的開的,還有看到克萊斯勒300C很霸氣的車子。這次上東眼山,人的技術沒多少進步,但是小勁戰已經比以前精進不少,前輪BT39、後輪MB67,加上仿B對四卡鉗,騎起來比以前更是揮灑自如阿,頻頻磨中柱阿XD。

  另外到了這裡沒有一天是輕鬆的睡著的,都是翻了老半天才睡著,應該是睡不習慣床板,加上生活規律使體力精神都不錯。睡不著就會亂想,想到以後要做什麼,發現其實也沒有特別想做什麼,想做的又離的很遠。國小一定都有一篇作文,像是我的志願之類的,現在想一想,為何小時候大人會問這個問題,那之後怎麼都不再問了,也沒有人叫我要常常問自己,發現這實在很重要阿。說不定我突然發現,其實我只是想當個賣雞排的,那我讀這些東西對我賣雞排沒有直接的幫助,那麼我就走錯方向了。

  國中之後只有讀書,老師都說以後到高中就輕鬆了阿,高中老師說以後到大學就輕鬆了阿,是阿,可是我到大學要幹嘛阿???雖然學的東西真的很有趣,我也蠻有興趣的,可是還是不懂以後要做什麼。打了這麼多,感覺我在牽拖喔,哈哈哈,就讓我發發牢騷吧。

Flying the flag in the World Championship

In a World Championship dominated by Italians and Spaniards, with sizeable representation from countries such as France, Great Britain, America, Australia and Germany, some of the more ‘exotic’ nations are putting their names into the mix in 2009.

現在的GP世界由義大利人和西班牙人統治著,還有其他來自如法國、英國、美國、澳洲和德國,還有其他異國風情的車手出現在2009年的賽季。

This year’s entry list features six riders flying the flag for their nation across the three cylinder categories on a full-time basis, with all having the chance to blaze new trails on the world stage.

從今年三個等級的中列出六位各具特色,並且有機會在這國際舞台創造新紀錄,各自代表他的國家的正式車手。

Top of the list are two competitors in the premier class, with Alex de Angelis undertaking his second year on an 800cc bike. Representing San Marino, the San Carlo Honda Gresini man has been left on his lonesome in the World Championship after the departure from the scene of Manuel Poggiali –the Republic’s only title winner courtesy of his 125cc and 250cc crowns in 2001 and 2003.

名單最上方是兩位初級比賽的對手,同樣代表聖馬利諾的Alex de Angelis開始他獨自代表國家追求800C.C等級冠軍的第二個賽季,升上GP等級而離開了他的同胞Manuel Poggiali 的舞台,Manuel Poggiali在2001年贏得125CC冠軍、2003年250CC冠軍。

Similarly attempting to increase his country’s title haul to two is Finn Mika Kallio, who has big boots to fill upon his arrival in MotoGP. Pramac Racing’s former 125cc World Championship runner-up is following in the footsteps of the late great Jarno Saarinen, to date the only rider from Finland to take a title across the current classes. Kallio stays true to the ‘hang off’ style of the former quarter-litre World Champion, thanks to his keeping with the tradition of ice racing in his homeland.

替自己的國家得到新獎盃的企圖也發生在芬蘭車手Mika Kallio身上,他升上GP帶來很大的效益。這位250CC前亞軍跟隨他的同胞前輩Jarno Saarinen的腳步,要註明他現在是現階段唯一的芬蘭車手。Kallio維持了他的同胞,前250冠軍的Hang off 風格,也承襲了來自芬蘭冰上賽車的風格傳統。

Austria and the Netherlands have both seen respectable numbers of riders competing under their respective banners in recent history, but the two European nations have experienced a dip in numbers for 2009. Michael Ranseder and newcomer Jasper Iwema are the sole representatives in the lower cylinder categories.

澳洲和荷蘭的車手人數在過去的歷史上總是很可觀。但是兩個歐洲國家,奧地利和荷蘭車手人數在2009年是減少的,Michael Ranseder 和新人Jasper Iwema是各自唯一代表國家在初階等級的車手。

More notable is the arrival of Russian Vladamir Leonov in 250cc, ending a long drought of full-time riders from his country in the World Championship. In fact, previous points scorers Nikolai Sevostayanov and Endel Kiisa made their mark on the 500cc and 250cc classes back in the 1960’s, over twenty years before the collapse of the U.S.S.R.

更值得注意的是250CC等級的俄羅斯車手ladamir Leonov,結束了俄羅斯在摩托錦標賽的長久缺席。事實上最後在場上得過積分的俄羅斯車手,要追朔到1960年代的Nikolai Sevostayanov 和 Endel Kiisa分別在GP500和250等級,比蘇維埃社會主義共和聯盟垮台還早20年。 

The rider most celebrated for his role in forwarding the development of motorcycle racing in his country, Ratthapark Wilairot could further add to his popularity in Thailand this year with a continuation of his steady progression. After a wild card appearance in 2006, Wilairot has been a regular fixture on the 250cc grid since 2007 and the first Thai rider to complete a Grand Prix season.

在他自己的國家最有名、推動摩托運動發展的車手是泰國車手Ratthapark Wilairot。他在國內的歡迎程度將隨著他的賽車事業繼續發展下去。自2006年以外卡身分參賽,從2007年Ratthapark Wilairot 已經是250CC的固定正式車手 ,而且也是首位完成一個完整賽季的泰國車手。

The sextet will have the hopes of their nations on their shoulders on April 12th, when they begin the season in Qatar.

這六個車手將在4/12號Qatar開季第一場比賽,背負著他們國家的期待出賽。

San Carlo Honda Gresini 2009 MotoGP project launched

Former 125cc World Champion Fausto Gresini was the master of ceremonies at the official 2009 launch of the San Carlo Honda Gresini team in Milan on Wednesday, with Toni Elias and Alex de Angelis of course in attendance alongside a number of additional important guests.

前125CC世界冠軍 Fausto Gresini 在週三、米蘭舉辦的2009年正式發表典禮上成為主角,他所籌備的 San Carlo Honda Gresini team 將參加2009年MotoGP錦標賽。Toni Elias 和 Alex de Angelis 當然是會場上重要的來賓。

Gresini, who won the 125cc title in 1985 and 1987, was delighted to present the team’s ambitious 2009 project, and stated, “It is always a great feeling and a real honour to officially present the team for a new season. This will be an important year for the San Carlo Honda Gresini team, a MotoGP season which promises to be exciting and competitive and for which we are prepared to assume a leading role. I believe firmly in the potential of my riders. Alex has accumulated vital experience, having a complete MotoGP season under his belt, while Toni returns to the team with a wealth of expertise himself.”

The Italian team boss continued, “HRC have carried out excellent work in their preparation of the 2009-spec RC212V and they will guarantee technical support of the highest level to the San Carlo Honda Gresini Team throughout the entire season, both for the ‘satellite’ bike entrusted to Alex as well as for Toni’s factory-spec bike. I wish the riders and all the guys in the team the very best of luck. Naturally I would also like to say special thanks to all our partners who have believed in our projects over many years, especially San Carlo.”

Numerous personalities from the world of two wheels were present, including Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta , Honda Italia President Yasuhiro Oyama and the Italian Motorcycle Federation President Paolo Sesti. The team’s main sponsor was also represented by Alberto Villaloni, President of the San Carlo Gruppo Alimentare.

Elias’ team-mate De Angelis, who got his big break in the MotoGP class last year with Gresini’s team, added, “I am approaching this new challenge with great enthusiasm. It will be an even tougher championship than last season, but I feel much stronger in myself. Now I have the experience of one year in MotoGP and the new RC212V is definitely competitive, above all with regard to the engine power. I aim to improve upon my results, I am not content with the two fourth positions that I scored last year.”

Elias的隊友De Angelis上個賽季在 Gresini’s team 因事故受了傷,他補充說"我抱著充分的熱情接受這個挑戰,這可能比上個賽季更為艱難,但是我對自己更有信心。現在我有了一年完整的GP資歷,RC212V也更為精進,尤其引擎輸出更受到重視。我的目標是提高我的名次,我不滿足於去年得到的兩個第四名"。

Driver with most race wins to become 2009 champion

Formula One racing’s governing body, the FIA, has approved a change to the points systems for this year’s drivers’ championship, which will see the title awarded to the driver with the most race wins. The rest of the standings, from second to last place, will be decided by the current points system.

一級方程式管理單位FIA已經許可了今年度新的積分系統,車手冠軍將會是贏的最多分站的車手取得。其餘第二名到吊車尾還是保持現行系統不變。

If two or more drivers finish the season with the same number of wins, the title will be awarded to the driver with the most points, the allocation of points being based on the existing 10, 8, 6 etc. structure. The constructors’ championship is unaffected.

如果超過一名車手取得相同分站冠軍數,那麼由積分高者得到年度車手冠軍,積分分配照現行的10、8、6、...分配。關於車隊冠軍規則沒有改變。

The FIA’s World Motor Sport Council accepted the proposal for the new system from Formula One Management at a meeting in Paris on Tuesday. An alternative proposal to change the points awarded to drivers finishing in first, second and third place to 12, 9 and 7 points respectively was rejected.

FIA世界賽車運動會議同意週二在巴黎FOM所提出的新系統提案。另一個改變積分分配為12、9、7的提案遭到否決。

Further changes agreed by the Council included minor tweaks to the testing regulations, increased media duties for teams and drivers at races, and a cost capping option for 2010 (see separate story). Honda’s request to have their entry changed to the Brawn GP Formula One Team was also approved.

會議同意的改變還包括了測試規則的小改動,增加了媒體對車隊和車手在比賽時的採訪權。和一個約束自己車隊預算上限後在2010年可以選擇的方案。Honda將參賽權改為Brawn GP的要求也通過。

The WMSC accepted the proposal from Formula One Management to award the drivers’ championship to the driver who has won the most races during the season. If two or more drivers finish the season with the same number of wins, the title will be awarded to the driver with the most points, the allocation of points being based on the current 10, 8, 6 etc. system.

會議同意FOM提出車手世界冠軍的頭銜由季中勝場數最多的車手獲得。有兩人以上的車手勝場數相同,那麼將由積分高者得到冠軍。積分分配系統維持現行的10、8、6、...分配方式。

The rest of the standings, from second to last place, will be decided by the current points system. There is no provision to award medals for first, second or third place. The Constructors’ Championship is unaffected.

其餘的名次由現行積分系統決定,不會有獎牌頒給一、二、三名。車隊冠軍方面規則沒有影響。

The WMSC rejected the alternative proposal from the Formula One Teams’ Association to change the points awarded to drivers finishing in first, second and third place to 12, 9 and 7 points respectively.

會議否決了另一個FOTA的提案,內容是更改一、二、三名績分為12、9、7分。

Testing

測試

Teams will be allowed to carry out three one day young driver training tests between the end of the last event of the Championship and 31 December of the same year. Drivers are eligible only if they have not competed in more than two F1 World Championship Events in the preceding 24 months or tested a Formula One car on more than four days in the same 24 month period.

允許車隊在最後一場比賽後和今年12/31有三天的時間執行新車手的訓練測試。允許車手試車的條件是在過去24個月內沒有參加超過2場錦標賽或測試賽車超過4天。

Teams can also conduct eight one day aerodynamic tests carried out on FIA approved straight line or constant radius sites between 1 January 2009 and the end of the last Event of the 2009 Championship.

在2009 1/1到賽季最後一場錦標賽之間,車隊可以做八次每次一天的空力測試,場地有FIA認可的直線道路或是圓形道路。

Media

The FIA will publish the weights of all cars after qualifying at each Event.

For greater clarity for spectators and media, wet tyres have been renamed “intermediate” and extreme-weather tyres renamed “wet”.

為了讓比賽內容對觀眾和媒體更清楚,半雨胎改名為中性胎,全雨胎改名為溼地胎。

On the first day of practice all drivers must be available for autograph signing in their designated team space in the pit lane.

在賽前練習的第一天,所有的車允許在PIT內車隊的場地裡拍照和簽名。

All drivers eliminated in qualifying must make themselves available for media interviews immediately after the end of each session.

在排位賽中被淘汰的車手,在每一階段結束後必須讓他們可以馬上被媒體訪問。

Any driver retiring before the end of the race must make himself available for media interviews after his return to the paddock.

As an alternative to running under the existing rules, which are to remain stable until 2012, all teams will have the option to compete with cars built and operated within a stringent cost cap.

The cost cap is £30m (currently approximately €33 or $42m). This figure will cover all expenditure of any kind. Anything subsidised or supplied free will be deemed to have cost its full commercial value and rigorous auditing procedures will apply.

To enable these cars to compete with those from teams which are not subject to cost constraints, the cost-capped cars will be allowed greater technical freedom.

The FIA has the right to adjust elements of these freedoms to ensure that the cost-capped cars have neither an advantage nor a disadvantage when compared to cars running to the existing rules.

The Honda Racing F1 Team requested to change its name to the Brawn GP Formula One Team. The WMSC accepted this request on the basis that the team is, in effect, a new entry in the FIA Formula One World Championship. The contract the team had with the FIA was to run as ‘Honda’, which they are no longer in a position to do. However, the standard fee required for a new entry has been waived.

Jerez day two - Alonso and Renault end Brawn domination

Renault’s Fernando Alonso was the quickest man at Jerez on Monday, ending Ross Brawn’s team’s recent monopoly on the top of the testing timesheets. Alonso finished less than a tenth of a second ahead of Rubens Barrichello after a productive session at the Spanish circuit.

Ross Brawn had both his team’s drivers in action. Barrichello completed a series of set-up and tyre evaluations and covered 62 laps in the morning. Jenson Button took over for the afternoon and began a race simulation before a gearbox problem brought his running to an early conclusion after 12 laps, leaving him third fastest.

Lewis Hamilton was fourth after 87 laps for McLaren. The world champion’s programme began with the evaluation of a number of new, subtle aerodynamic modifications to the MP4-24, before a series of longer runs to assess the new aero package’s effect on tyre degradation.
