Williams establish technical centre in Qatar

Williams are to open the first Formula One-related technical centre outside of Europe in the Middle Eastern state of Qatar. The Williams Technology Centre (WTC) will be based at the Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP) and will be tasked with developing F1 technologies for commercial application.

Initially it will focus on two such projects, both with clear commercial goals - the industrial application of large Magnetically Loaded Composite (MLC) flywheels and the advancement of Williams’ simulator know-how for competition and road car use.

The flywheel project will address their potential to store and release energy very quickly. Initial target markets include mass transit systems such as trains and trams. The WTC is expected to employ 20 staff, with a multi-million dollar R&D budget and a carefully projected revenue stream that will reward both Williams and QSTP, who are investing in the project and are already renowned for the research, development and commercialisation of new technologies by companies such as Shell and Microsoft.

Barrichello returns Brawn to winning ways in Spain

Rubens Barrichello had said all year that he will win for Brawn GP, and he finally came good in Valencia with a controlled performance that brought him home just over two seconds ahead of McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.

The world champion led at the start as expected, from McLaren team mate Heikki Kovalainen, both using their KERS to keep Barrichello in third place. Behind them, Kimi Raikkonen thrust up to fourth, also using the Ferrari's KERS button. Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel went with them after seeing off Brawn GP’s Jenson Button, whose race soon collapsed with tyre graining issues which sent him backwards early on.

Hamilton led until his first pit stop on Lap 16, leaving Kovalainen to take over on the 17th, when he too stopped. Thereafter Barrichello ran another three laps before refuelling. That put his Brawn ahead of Kovalainen for the middle stint. Behind them, Raikkonen had no trouble keeping fourth ahead of Williams’ Nico Rosberg and Renault’s Fernando Alonso, leaving Mark Webber to fight with Button.

Hamilton had a lead of 3.6s over Barrichello by Lap 36, but when he pitted again a lap later McLaren did not have his front tyres ready after a late request to him to do one more lap came just as he was about to enter the pits. That delay proved costly - though the team insisted it didn't cost them the win - and when Barrichello pitted from the lead on Lap 40 he was able to resume ahead of Hamilton.

The Briton kept the pressure on Barrichello all the way, but could not close the gap by more than a couple of tenths each lap until the Brazilian backed off right at the end, and it came down from 3.9s to 2.3s. Raikkonen jumped Kovalainen on the second stop, and the ‘other’ Finn had his hands full holding off an aggressive Rosberg in the final laps.

Webber also lost out on the second stop, crucially dropping behind both Button and BMW Sauber’s Robert Kubica. Thus seventh place behind Alonso was enough for Button to increase his championship lead by two points to 72. He was the fastest man on the track for a long time in the closing laps on Bridgestone’s super-soft tyres, until they went off and he had to abandon his pursuit of the Renault. Kubica hung on ahead of Webber to score the final point.

It was a tough day for Red Bull, with Vettel retiring with his second engine failure of the weekend on Lap 24, having already made one refuelling stop and one unscheduled stop after a problem with the fuel rig.

Further back, Adrian Sutil claimed 10th for Force India ahead of Nick Heidfeld in the second BMW Sauber and Giancarlo Fisichella in the second Force India. The Toyotas were 13th and 14th, with Timo Glock bettering Button’s fastest lap right at the end. Romain Grosjean’s debut for Renault yielded only 15th place, not helped by damaging his nose on the opening lap and needing an unscheduled stop as a result, and later a half spin.

Jaime Alguersuari looked less convincing than he had in Hungary on his way to 16th for Toro Rosso, while team mate Sebastien Buemi ran into trouble after he damaged his front wing in a brush with Glock on the opening lap and had to stop for a replacement. Later he spun in Turn 12 on Lap 43 and could not continue.

Luca Badoer’s return to Formula One racing was unimpressive. He ran down the back all day, let Grosjean overtake him as they left the pits, and then got a drive-through penalty for crossing the white line on the exit. He might have achieved his ambition of a finish, but he did so in 17th place. The only other classified car behind him was Kazuki Nakajima’s Williams, who was delayed by a left rear tyre failure and then pitted for good just before the flag.

So Brawn increased their constructors’ championship lead over Red Bull, 126 points to 98.5, and Barrichello vaulted back to second place in the drivers' with 54 points to Webber’s 51.5.

Barrichello's win marked the 100th by a Brazilian driver, and fittingly he dedicated it to Felipe Massa, who had advised him on racing lines only last week. It was also the 250th race for the McLaren Mercedes partnership, and Bridgestone’s 150th victory. And it left the title fight wide open as the paddock heads to Belgium next week.

McLaren: we want to keep Kovalainen, but he’ll have to improve

While Lewis Hamilton’s stunning victory in Hungary put the reigning world champion - and a recovering McLaren - back in centre stage, Hamilton’s team mate Heikki Kovalainen is yet to make a real impression this season. With five retirements and only three point-scoring finishes, Kovalainen is languishing 12th in the standings - a full 19 points adrift of the tally he had after 10 races in 2008.

正當Lewis Hamilton在匈牙利站令人吃驚的勝利將自己和麥拉倫車隊重新拉回到中游的位置,而他的隊友Heikki Kovalainen在本季則還沒有驚人的表現。五次退賽而且目前只拿到三分,Kovalainen在積分榜上排第十二位,跟他在08賽季同樣十場比賽後差了19分。

For a driver without a confirmed seat for next season, it must be a worrying time. And while team boss Martin Whitmarsh is full of praise for the Finn, he also revealed that he will be looking for an improvement in his driver’s results over the coming Grands Prix, if the 27 year-old is to keep his race drive.

對一個下一季的職位還不確定的車手來說,現在一定是要擔心的時候了。並且車隊經理Martin Whitmarsh在鼓勵這位芬蘭人之餘,也透露他如果想要保有現在的車手位置,必須要在接下來的比賽中提升他的表現。

“Heikki, as a team player, is doing a fantastic job,” explained Whitmarsh during a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes 'Phone-In' session. “By his own evaluation he hasn’t raced as well as he would have liked, and we would have liked him to, this year. I was just talking to him on the subject about three minutes before I came to this call, as he’s in the factory at the moment.

According to Whitmarsh, one of Kovalainen’s strengths is his qualifying ability. And he wants his driver to concentrate on
maintaining his Saturday pace, which has seen him clinch two consecutive sixth-place grid slots over the last two races,
whilst also raising his game during Sunday’s action in order to get some vital points.

Several Germans, including BMW Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld, Williams’ Nico Rosberg and Force India’s Adrian Sutil, have been tipped to take Kovalainen’s place in the Mercedes-powered team next year, but Whitmarsh was quick to dismiss the rumours, stating that they are not involved in any active negotiations with other drivers.

Capirossi drops hint on 2010 continuation

With the news of Álvaro Bautista’s signing by Rizla Suzuki team for 2010 confirmed on Sunday the next big question surrounding the team is, ‘who will he be riding with?’

在週日宣佈Álvaro Bautista將在2010年加入Suzuki廠隊後,下一個圍繞著車隊的問題是,'誰會是他的隊友'。

Current riders Loris Capirossi and Chris Vermeulen both see their Suzuki contracts run out at the end of this season and the team is yet to make any announcement about who will partner new boy Bautista in the box next season.

However, Capirossi gave a big hint of how things could work out when he said on Monday, “I think the team have made a great choice to pick Álvaro because he is a very strong rider and I believe he will be very comfortable in the team. With a new chassis and a new engine incorporated into the GSV-R this weekend Capirossi produced a solid fifth place in the Brno race and then ended up fourth on the test timesheet. He commented, “We were quite satisfied with how things went in the test. We rode all through the morning, trying settings and working on the new chassis, which seems to be better. In the afternoon we also did a few laps in the rain to try a few more things and that also went quite well.”

Romain Grosjean to race for Renault

Renault have announced that third driver Romain Grosjean will race for the team at this weekend’s European Grand Prix, and for the rest of the 2009 season. Grosjean will drive alongside Fernando Alonso and replaces Nelson Piquet, who revealed he had parted company with the squad earlier this month.

雷諾車隊宣佈隊上的第三車手Romain Grosjean會在這週末的歐洲站出賽,並且跑完這個2009年賽季。Nelson Piquet在這個月稍早透露他已經被車隊除名後,Romain Grosjean將取代Nelson Piquet的位置,成為Fernando Alonso的新隊友,

"I am very proud that Renault have given me the chance to become a race driver,” said Grosjean. “I'm looking forward to driving the R29 and helping the team get the best results possible. The 23 year-old Frenchman joined Renault’s driver development programme in 2006, after winning the French Formula Renault title. In 2007 he was Formula Three Euro Series champion and in 2008 he won the GP2 Asia Series. This season, Grosjean has been racing in GP2 and had scored two victories before being called on to make his Formula One debut.

MotoGP riders enjoy Viennese adventure

An exciting gathering organised by Austrian national broadcasters ATV and witnessed by thousands of local fans saw a demonstration ride through the heart of the Vienna, on Wednesday, with Jorge Lorenzo (Fiat Yamaha), Nicky Hayden (Ducati Marlboro), James Toseland (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) and Gabor Talmacsi (Scot Racing) all taking part.

在週三奧地利國家電視台(ATV)舉辦了一場刺激的街頭表演,當地的上千名車迷見證了各家賽車展示性的騎過維也納市中心街頭,參與的有Jorge Lorenzo (Fiat Yamaha), Nicky Hayden (Ducati Marlboro), James Toseland (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) 和 Gabor Talmacsi (Scot Racing)。

Although MotoGP has visited Vienna before this was the first time in history that the riders were allowed to take their prototype machines along the famous Ringstreet, the main boulevard in the city.

Local government welcomingly treated the event like a state visit, with the Austrian police riding ahead of the World Championship stars on a 5.2km loop through the city centre. The route commenced at the Burgtheater on Josef-Meinrad-Place, along Ringstreet, past several important buildings such as the State Opera House, the most famous historical museums and the Austrian Parliament and eventually returning to the Burgtheater.

Ahead of the closest race to his home nation of Hungary, Talmacsi stated, “This kind of event is fantastic because you feel the support from the fans and there are a lot of Hungarians because it’s very close. We also did a big promotion in my country, on Monday, so I expect a lot of fans in Brno. I like the track so much, it is good for my riding style but in MotoGP this is my first time there. Of course I’ll try my best and now I have more feeling with the motorcycle and I feel stronger personally.”

Former World Champion Hayden, who is popular with the public wherever he goes, added, “It was a great opportunity for the fans to get close to the bikes and to the riders, and hopefully for us to show them a bit of our sport. Perhaps we can get a new audience that have not seen our bikes before and I think it’s a good build up for the weekend. Last year I missed the race but Brno is a great track, fast, flowing and a lot of long straight aways so I am looking forward to the weekend now.”

Schumacher calls off Formula One comeback

Michael Schumacher has revealed he won’t return to Formula One racing at the European Grand Prix later this month. Schumacher had planned to replace the injured Felipe Massa for Ferrari at the Valencia race, but has been forced to cancel his comeback due to pain in his neck, which was caused by a motorcycle accident earlier this year.

大舒表示他不會在這個月稍晚的歐洲GP站出賽,他先前計劃要代替受傷的Massa在瓦倫西亞出賽,但是因為今年稍早的摩托車意外讓他的頸部受傷而被迫取消復出。

“Yesterday evening, I had to inform Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo and team principal Stefano Domenicali that unfortunately I'm not able to step in for Felipe,” explained the seven-time world champion in a statement on his official website. “I really tried everything to make that temporary comeback possible, however, much to my regret it didn't work out.”

Lauda on Schumacher: the hunger for competition never dies

The 2009 Formula One season has already had its fair share of major stories, but all are set to be surpassed by Michael Schumacher’s planned comeback in the forthcoming European Grand Prix, replacing Felipe Massa. One man who knows all about comebacks is Niki Lauda, who walked away from the sport in 1979, only to return two seasons later and ultimately win a third world title. We got his take on Schumacher’s prospects…

Q: Niki, what was the reason for your return and what do you think is Michael’s?
Niki Lauda: Let’s leave aside my reasons - that’s all too long ago and they definitely were different from his. Let’s focus on Michael. He was never able to detox himself of the racing bug, as we have seen with his on-track motorcycle activities. In my opinion he retired at the end of the 2006 season because he couldn’t see a real challenge - and probably he regretted his decision. Now he’s got the unique chance to step in for the injured Massa to help his former team, and to find out for himself how competitive he still is. This is something that would also interest me, because this hunger for competition - for the adrenalin rush - never dies. It’s in our DNA. And the situation as it is now at Ferrari, with a recovering Massa and an available cockpit, gives him the chance to explore how far he’s off the top. That is a question that always puzzles a top driver like he was.

Q:Niki,是什麼理由讓你復出?而你認為大舒復出的理由是什麼?

Q: What about his age? When you returned to the Formula One cockpit you were 31 years old - Michael is 40…
NL: Forget about the age. He is fit, he’s undergoing rigorous training and mentally he is taking up the challenge. He will do everything possible to be fit as a fiddle in Valencia. True, there are some obstacles that he has to overcome, like his unfamiliarity with the track and that he’s had no chance to test this year’s car, but that’s part of his challenge and that’s why he’s doing it. And that’s why the whole world will be watching.

Q:他的年紀是個問題嗎?你回到F1駕駛艙時是31歲,大舒已經40歲了....

Q: Fitness plays a major role. Michael was exercising all the time - how was it with you back then?
NL: Yes, Michael has tried to retain as much as possible his fitness from his race days. Look, he was able to put in a whole day in the old car in Mugello a few days ago. With me it was different. I hadn’t done anything for two years and when I did my first test in October 1981 I hardly managed three laps. That was a sharp signal for me that I’d better start improving my fitness immediately if my return to Formula One was not to end as a farce. So this was a whole different situation to the one that Michael is in. Basically, he has to focus mainly on the muscles that are called on in an F1 car - and, of course, the neck - but that should be manageable in the next two weeks. But in the end the final word will be with the doctors, to decide whether he is in the physical state to race.

Q:健康是很重要的因素,大舒一直都有在做訓練-他跟你復出當時相比如何?

Q: You became world champion again in your third year back from retirement. What do you think Michael can achieve?
NL: I actually won the second race back after my retirement, but Michael is not racing for any championship. I came back because I wanted to win, if my comeback was successful. For Michael it’s nothing more than an interesting experiment.

Q:你在復出後的第三年再次拿到世界冠軍,你認為大舒這次復出會有什麼成果?
NL:我實際上在復出後第二場比賽就得勝,但是大舒不是為世界冠軍頭銜比賽,如果我的復出是成功的,是因為我渴望勝利,但是對大舒而言復出是個有趣的測試。

Q: How long will his guest appearance last?
NL: Only as long as Massa is in his recovery process. Period.

Williams against Schumacher test

The Williams team have voiced their opposition to Ferrari’s request to let Michael Schumacher test the team’s current car in preparation for his planned Formula One comeback at the European Grand Prix.

威廉斯車隊已經對法拉利車隊的要求表示反對,法拉利車隊打算讓大舒在歐洲站上場前試駕今年的賽車。

With testing banned during the season under the current regulations, Ferrari had asked their fellow teams and the FIA for special permission to give Schumacher a run in the F60 ahead of his appearance at Valencia, where he is due to take the place of the injured Felipe Massa.

Lifting the lid - Formula One helmets uncovered

Before last Saturday at the Hungaroring, helmets only really made the headlines when a driver decided to sport a new livery or auction one for charity. But Felipe Massa’s dramatic accident during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix brought driver safety - and in particular the great strides made in helmet design over the past few years - into much sharper focus.

在上週六的匈牙利站前,安全帽只有在車手要秀出新贊助或是慈善拍賣時才會上頭條。但是Massa在匈牙利站排位賽的嚴重意外讓車手安全再度成為焦點,特別是過去幾年來安全帽設計上的進步幅度。

Back in Formula One racing’s early days, it was speed, not safety that took precedence. Legendary world champion Juan Manuel Fangio preferred to race in a simple balaclava. But by 1953, even Fangio couldn’t hold back the tide, and helmets were made compulsory. The ones used nowadays, however, bear little resemblance to their primitive 1950’s predecessors and are the product of years of research and development.

As with all aspects of the sport’s safety, the FIA sets the standard, and the governing body’s most recent evolution of their helmet regulations, FIA 8860-2004, was developed over an eight-year period. Drafted by UK testing facility, Transport Research Laboratory (TRL), the new criteria were adopted by the three main Formula One helmet manufacturers, Arai, Bell and Schuberth, and the resulting homologated helmets were made compulsory by the World Motor Sport Council in 2004.

Although the exact composition of the materials that make up a Formula One helmet is a secret closely guarded by the manufacturers, the rigid outer shell features a couple of layers, usually fibre-reinforced resin over carbon fibre. Underneath, there is a layer of aramid (also used in many bulletproof vests) and another much thicker layer of polyethylene, a soft and deformable material, which is covered with the same flameproof material used in drivers’ overalls. Smaller quantifies of aluminium, magnesium and the binding agent epoxy resin are all added to the mix too.

The typical weight of a Formula One helmet is a remarkably minimal 1250 grams. The lighter the helmet, the less weight it adds to the driver’s head under extreme G-forces, which in turn lessens the risk of whiplash-type injuries when something goes wrong. But as Massa’s accident in Hungary so dramatically demonstrated, a helmet also needs to be super strong, so it can absorb impacts and resist penetration during a crash.

With these (somewhat incompatible) aims of being both tough and lightweight, it’s no wonder the effort that goes into crafting a helmet that can fulfil the FIA’s demands is immense. First, the driver’s head is scanned to create a life-size model. This sculpted replica is then wrapped, layer by layer, with 120 mats of high-performance carbon fibre to ensure the perfect fit.

With every thread of fibre consisting of about 12,000 ‘microthreads’, each of which is about 15 times thinner than a human hair, the process is as expensive as it is cutting edge. In one helmet, the total length of all the threads is approximately 16,000 kilometres. Over the same distance you could drive from Tokyo to London.

The individual layers are then bonded together in an autoclave (a type of ‘industrial pressure cooker’), hardening under high pressure and at a constant temperature of 132°C. In addition, the parts which will be subject to huge loads once the helmet is in use, like the visor cut-out, are reinforced with supplementary materials, like aluminium and titanium.

As well as fulfilling its primary role of protecting a driver, the helmet must also allow him to see and breathe. Ventilation is provided through a small intake at the front, which filters the air to clean it of any motor oil, carbon and brake dust particles. Up to 10 litres of fresh air flow into the helmet’s interior per second.

安全帽不只要達成保護車手的安全,還要讓車手可以有好的視野和通暢的呼吸。前方所開的小孔可以維持安全帽的通風性,有濾網可以過濾空氣中的油污、碳纖維煞車所造成的粉塵,每秒大約有十公升的空氣流入安全帽。

The visor is made from a three millimetre-thick piece of specially-devised clear polycarbonate. Combining excellent impact protection, with flame resistance and excellent visibility, it’s by far the best solution. Most drivers tend to use tinted visors, which are coated with anti-fogging chemicals to prevent them misting up. In addition, there are several transparent tear-off strips attached to the outside, which the driver can remove as and when the visor gets dirty.

With equally strict safety standards to live up to, helmets are tested just as thoroughly as the cars. Fitted on an imitation metal ‘head’, and equipped with sensors that measure deceleration, the helmet is mounted on a sledge running on vertical track. To replicate an impact, the helmet (and ‘head’) are then lifted to a specified height and dropped on to a variety of objects, including a flat surface, a sharp edge, and a half-sphere.

The helmet test facility at TRL boasts a drop tower over 15.5m tall, which is capable of accelerating objects through gravity by up to around 17m/s (63km/h). A helmet designed to meet the FIA’s 8860 standards needs to withstand an impact of 9.5m/s (34.2 km/h). At this speed, the sensors must never display a deceleration of more than 300g, while 225 joules of energy must be dissipated.

In line with the regulations, helmets also undergo a variety of further deformation and fragmentation evaluations, as well as procedures to test the HANS device, which prevents a driver’s head from hitting the steering wheel. There’s also a compulsory fire test, during which the helmet is subjected to an 800°C flame for 45 seconds. To pass, temperatures inside the helmet are not allowed to exceed 70°C, otherwise it is back to the drawing board. The visor, meanwhile, has its protective qualities evaluated by having projectiles shot at it at 500km/h. The impact marks must not exceed a depth of 2.5mm.

要完全符合技術規章,安全帽要能承受各種變型和破碎評估,還要跟HANS一起做測試,HANS能夠防止車手頭部與方向盤發生撞擊。還有高溫測試,安全帽要能忍受八百度高溫四十五秒,要通過測試,安全帽內部溫度不可超過七十度,否則就要重新設計。面罩也有安全測試,要承受時速500公里的物體撞擊,撞擊痕跡不可深於2.5公厘。

On top of these all-important safety tests, helmets also go through stringent wind-tunnel trials to ensure the design creates minimal drag when the driver is travelling at speed. All in all then, from start to finish developing a Formula One helmet is a long-winded and pricey process. But considering that Massa is already up and about - and talking about getting back behind the wheel - it’s clearly worth all the effort.

BMW announce Formula One withdrawal

BMW will end their involvement in Formula One racing at the end of the current season, it was announced on Wednesday. The move is part of what the German car maker described as a ‘landmark’ decision to restructure its motorsport activities.

BMW 在今年賽季結束因為財務關係將中止參加F1,將會在週三發佈消息。這個變動是BMW所稱為"里程碑"決議中的一部份,BMW將重新劃分他們的摩托活動。

The news came at a press conference held at the company’s German headquarters in Munich, attended by BMW Sauber team principal Mario Theissen, along with Dr. Norbert Reithofer, the chairman of the BMW board, and Dr. Klaus Draeger, the director for development.

這項消息是由在德國慕尼黑總部舉行的記者會上發佈,主席者有BMW Sauber車隊總管Mario Theissen、同行的有BMW董事會主席Norbert Reithofer博士和發展主管Klaus Draeger博士。

BMW became Formula One entrants in 2006 after taking over the Swiss Sauber team. The company said the decision to withdraw stems from a desire to dedicate more resources to developing new, sustainable road car technologies.

“Of course, this was a difficult decision for us,” explained Reithofer. “But it’s a resolute step in view of our company's strategic realignment. Premium will increasingly be defined in terms of sustainability and environmental compatibility. This is an area in which we want to remain in the lead. Our Formula One campaign is thus less a key promoter for us."

Paying tribute to Theissen’s leadership of BMW Sauber, who finished third in last year’s championship, Reithofer added: “Mario has been in charge of our motorsports program since 1999. We have scored a large number of successes in this period, including some in Formula One racing. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mario Theissen and his team for this.”

We will now focus sharply on the remaining races and demonstrate our fighting spirit and put in a good result as we bid farewell to Formula One racing.”

BMW’s original Formula One involvement began in the 1980s as an engine supplier. With Brabham from 1982 to ’85, the company clinched eight Formula One victories and one world title, courtesy of Nelson Piquet in 1983. Following a final win with Benetton in 1986, BMW were absent from F1 competition until 2000 when they began supplying engines to Williams, taking 10 victories over the following five years.

In 2006 the company took over the Sauber team and enjoyed a positive first season as a fully-fledged works entry, finishing fifth in the constructors’ championship, with two podium finishes. The team went from strength to strength in 2007, occupying the ‘best of the rest’ slot behind Ferrari and McLaren. Scoring in all 17 races, BMW Sauber eventually finished second in the standings, behind Ferrari.

Last year, the team became championship contenders, with driver Robert Kubica clinching the team’s first pole position in Bahrain and then a maiden win at the Canadian Grand Prix. However, they have found the going a lot tougher this season and have scored just eight points to date.

Massa awake and progressing well

Felipe Massa has been taken out of an artificially-induced coma as his recovery continues, doctors told reporters in Budapest on Monday evening. The injured Ferrari driver has also been able to speak with family and medical staff.

醫師週一晚間在布達佩斯告訴記者Massa 正慢慢復原中,已經從昏迷狀態甦醒並且拿下氧氣罩了。這位受傷的法拉利車手已經可以和家人和醫護人員說話了。

"His condition has improved significantly over the last 24 hours and he remains stable," Lajos Zsiros, chief surgeon of the Hungarian defence forces told a press conference. "We have ended sedation and taken him off the respirator.”

"他的情況在過去24小時內有明顯的好轉並且穩定了",匈牙利的外科主任Lajos Zsiros向記者們表示。"我們已經將他從昏迷中甦醒並且不需要人工呼吸器"。

Massa suffered a fractured skull during Saturday’s qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix, after being hit by a spring from another car. He was flown from the Hungaroring circuit to the AEK military hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

"He is still sleepy, but has been able to reply to questions and has been able to move his limbs adequately," continued Zsiros, who went on to explain that it was likely to be at least a week before doctors could be sure that Massa has avoided lasting injury, though he stressed that a full recovery was possible.
